Tips for Travel Packing
#2: The Shoe Trick
Okay so this might sound ridiculous. Some might think its super obvious, and others are going to be mind blown. It’s just that so many people have watched me do this had the reaction, “OMG that’s such a good idea”. So here I am sharing it with you! In the grand scheme this is just one of many packing tips that help avoid wasting space or over-packing.
The Problem:
Packing shoes is probably the hardest part of packing. Why? Because shoes take up a lot of space in your luggage. If you’re someone like me who likes to travel light (in most cases carry on only), it might seem impossible to also have the right options available.
However, the worst thing you can do on a trip is have the wrong shoes. Say you want to go hiking on the fly but you didn’t pack any sneakers. Or you need a night out on the town but your dress shoes didn’t make the cut.
Don’t fret. It’s not hopeless. There is a way to fit both options in a compact way, and its absolutely free.
The Solution
1) Break Out The ZipLoc Bags
Go rummage through your pantry. Find sandwich sized zip lock bags. Grab 10-12 of them and put them next to your packing list.
2) Pack Up Your Delicates
Think small. Undies, socks, ties, anything that can be rolled up and stuffed in a zip one of those zip lock bags. Pack them up. These bags can later act as laundry separators to keep your bag from collecting odors.
3) Pick Your Shoes
The trick here is weather dependent. If you’re heavy on beachwear, flip-flops and sandals don’t take up much space. Avoid packing wedges. If however, leave the bulkiest pair of shoes to wear on the plane. Then pick 3-4 other sets of shoes that are appropriate for the trip.
4) Stuff the Zip Locks Inside the shoes
By filling up the shoes with other things on your packing list, it eliminates the dead space being taken up by the inside of the shoe. The more stuff you can pack up into the shoes, the more space you have to pack more shoes.
Simple, isn't it?
If you just had an “aha” moment, you’re welcome. It’s kind of obvious after you do it, but if you’re seeing it for the first time it’s pretty common to wonder “why haven’t I been doing this my whole life”. Later in this segment I’ll be discussing over-packing as well, so stay tuned!
